NORCAL NOISEFEST 2015 - LINE UP/ROSTER

ACTUARY (los angeles)
Since forming in the latter half of the past decade, California-based extreme noise outfit Actuary use guitars, drums, bass, analog synths, digital evils, and home made and rewired power electronics to make sound, noise, and music.......but mostly noise. They have steadily cranked out a stream of split releases that saw them sharing wax (or other petroleum-based substances) with everyone from Merzbow, Bastard Noise and Gnaw Their Tongues side-project Aderlating to cult underground noise spewers like Winters in Osaka, Bacteria Cult, Juhyo and Fetus Eaters. Keeping up with their prolific output has been a daunting task, but also a rewarding one, as Actuary’s epic-length blasts of abstract electronic chaos, extreme psychedelic circuit-fuckery and monstrous synth abuse consistently deliver serious sonic skull-melt. Ugly, beautiful, and bleak. Theres no hope.
SAT
ALPHASTARE (san francisco)
Jeff K. has been a experimental artist since the early 90's where he conducted various social/musical experiments in Buffalo as "Smackicide". Early influences include Throbbing Gristle/EN/Crash Worship/NWW. These early shows consisted of Jeff on noise guitars and drummer Corndog McGee as well as whoever was around that day and wanted to make some noise! Usually non musicians, usually subverting spaces like a coffehouse, an all girls HS gymnasium or a normally quiet jazz bar to create walls of cacophony. He then left Buffalo for LA in 1996 where he played guitar with outsider Punk band The Flesh Eaters for 5 years, then moved on to start his own psychedelic Band The Alphastares which disbanded in 2003 when Jeff moved up to San Francisco. After a break from experimental works Jeff resurrected his old band name and shortened it to just Alphastare as a working name for any solo experimental works as well as collabs. This will be Jeff's first appearance at NF.

AMPHIBIOUS GESTURES (san francisco)
Based in San Francisco, Ca, Amphibious Gestures is an interactive electronic noise project executed by Kasper Rodenborn, and is a direct result of collaborations with Mark C. Jackman of skozey fetisch since 1993. A.G. is a sci-fi sound vessel for manipulating oscillations and implementing extreme modifications in waveform frequencies. Originally conceived as a studio project in 1998, Amphibious Gestures is based on a tale involving a world wide multi-dimensional war among humanoids using sound as a weapon to gain terrain. Since then, A.G. has been concentrating specifically on live performances, which traditionally includes phantasmagoric characters in amphibious uniforms, adorned with color morphing lights. Recently added to the project, is Zac Comacho, who is a sound artist and vocalist with a unique sporadic style that contributes an additional intensity in audio sculpture, that compliments the already existing nature of Amphibious compositions. BEAUTY SCHOOL (san francisco)
Extreme extended techniques on electric bass, trumpet, and percussion intermarry with nasty homemade electronics and circuit-bent keyboards to re-define the boundaries of a kind of beauty that as yet has no name. Music can be avoided.
Tom Djll (of Grosse Abfahrt) and Jacob Felix Heule (of Sult) got together to try out some ideas from a Nicolas Collins hardware hacking workshop, and invited Matt Chandler (of Burmese) to make sure it didn't get too quiet. It ended up sounding like the nastiest seconds of an electric Miles concert splintered off and expanded into their own band. Chandler named the band Beauty School after the Idea Fire Company album.

MONTE CAZAZZA (nor cal)
Monte Cazazza is an American artist and composer best known for his seminal role in helping shape industrial music through recordings with the London-based Industrial Records in the mid-1970s. Based primarily in San Francisco during his early career, He is credited with coining the phrase "Industrial Music for Industrial People". This was later used to encapsulate the record label and the artists representing it. Later, the noise collages and experimental sound manipulation coming out of Industrial records came to be known as industrial music. Cazazza had built up an underground reputation as a particularly volatile performer with a potentially dangerous and antisocial aesthetic. Re/Search Magazine's Industrial Culture Handbook described his work as "insanity-outbreaks thinly disguised as art events".

We are damn excited to invite and welcome Monte to play at NCNF!!

For the past 25 years Thomas Dimuzio has worked as a solo artist and collaboratively with Dimmer, Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Nick Didkovsky, Negativland, Matmos, Wobbly, Dan Burke/Illusion of Safety, Due Process, Voice of Eye, ISIS, 5uu’s, Poptastic, and many others. His extensive discography includes more than 100 releases on labels RéR Megacorp, Seeland, RRRecords, Asphodel, No Fun Records, Drone Records, Record Label Records, Melon Expander, Odd Size Records, Gench Music, Phage Tapes, and Isounderscore.

“Attending a Thomas Dimuzio performance is like lying underneath a web of freeway bridges with your eyes closed; blocking out all visuals except the brief daggers of light that flicker with each passing car. There is a sense of probable dread — metal, wooden or cigarette debris from the vehicles could fly off and injure you — but also one of hypnotized calm, thanks to the amplified hum of Michelin and Goodyear against greased concrete. Dimuzio, a San Francisco electro-noise composer, seemingly replicates this experience with massive, body-vibrating drones punctuated by abrupt, skreeing hits of white noise. His improvised performances — usually performed with guitar feedback and short-wave radio files processed with a laptop and CDJ player-explore the gray area between tranquility and disarray, and they can draw your imagination into a wilderness it will refuse to leave, even when your nerves are shot by so many conflicting emotions.” — Cameron Macdonald, Pitchfork Media
This year will mark Mr. Dimuzio's 11th NF appearance!

THIRTEEN HURTS (pleasant view,CO)
Thirteen Hurts is an experimental noise project that utilizes modified guitar pedals and handmade sound source devices to create a harsh noise soundscape.
The earliest experimental recordings occurred in 1977, with sporadic experimental output burbling beneath the surface of efforts to create "normal" music. Years of performing and recording within the Rock and Progressive genres, it was not until 1999 and the formation of subcutaneous studios that the first full recording of experimental music took place, with exclusive usage of a Serge Modular. The following years led to soundtracks for both a documentary on the Lamborghini Miura and an independent film titled Medium Gray. This was followed by years of dormancy which eventually led to the development of the Thirteen Hurts/13Hz concept and new recordings with live performances. The live shows focus on a performance of three individual pieces, giving the audience a wide spectrum sampling of what the sound of Thirteen Hurts represents. This will be the 4th appearance of Thirteen Hurts at the Norcal Noisefest.
